Storey-and-a-half Houses

Storey-and-a-half

A classic 1940/50’s construction with its economy of construction and scale. Compare the size of new single-family homes today. The second floor area is substantially smaller than the main floor.

Large Storey-and-a-half

A 1930’s style storey-and-a-half with partial “shed roof” and veranda. These homes are characterized by the second floor rooms having sloping ceilings which come down to a short or “knee wall”. Shed roofs have the effect of reducing the ceiling slope and widening
the room.

Storey-and-a-half

A 150 year old pair of semi-detached houses, “Cape Cod” style.

A Cape Cod

A storey-and-a-half home with dormers. The dormers produce an alcove in the bedrooms and add additional light. Other windows are at the gable ends of the house.

A-Frame

This is also a storey-and-a-half home with steeply sloping walls/ceilings on both floors. Commonly used as cottages particularly for kit homes.
